How to Get On-Air with a Call

Lots of people call. If you want to speak on-air with Drake and Zeke, here's a few hints:

First - have a good connection! Your heardset probably isn't going to cut it, I don't care how much it cost you. Most people sound like they're calling from a cave when they use those. If you've got a crackling, staticy, dropping in-and-out, cell connection you need to get a better connection.

Next - Have a good thought on the topic at hand, or something they were just talking about. A serious or a funny observation that adds to the conversation is always great

Except when we've run out of time. Sorry, but it happens. Sometimes the topic plays itself out and we start going around in circles. Sometimes it's just time to go. Either way, even if you have a degree in and teach the day's topic at university level, we've got to move on.

I don't care about your rants. If you're just calling to scream at me for something without giving me a chance to get a witty comment in edgewise then don't bother. You're a lunatic and I just don't care.

Speak up because I can't. When D&Z are talking I've got to speak VERY QUIETLY into the phone so I don't feed the mike. So I can't ask you repeatedly and loudly to please speak up.

Understand there's a lot of lines and sometimes they're all ringing. If I hang up abruptly it's because I'm trying to get to everyone and find a gem to air. This is especially true if you tell me you don't want to be on the air. Sometimes I'll have time to review a topic for you, most of the times I won't.

Also understand I can't hear callers once they're on the air. So I have no idea what the last caller just said on the air because I'm probably answering other lines and have no means to hear them anyway.

If I ask your name and if you can hold on a minute it means I'm going to put you on hold and you'll probably get on the air. You may have to be very patient, there might be two other callers waiting in line ahead of you, and we might have to go to commercial before we can get to you. If you don't have time to wait, that's okay, but don't hang up just thinking that they're not going to get to you.

At least not until I get back on the line and tell you so. Sometimes we run out of time, sometimes they're ready to close the topic before they get to you. Sorry, but sometimes you may wait on hold with a great comment and not get all the way through anyway.

If where in an interview where we can take questions, please have a question, not a rant or a comment.

Basically, just don't be an asshole and it should all work out fine.

 


First Post - Of What I Do

My name is Wes, I'm the Studio prodcuer for the Drake and Zeke show. I'm the guy that gets there before anyone else in the show and sets up everything for them so D and Z can find everything ready to go as soon as they walk in. Sometimes this works out better than other times.

During the show I'm hunting down more stories and information for them - yes I'm essentially getting paid to stick around and cruise the internet, but it's all in the name of work (most of the time). But the biggest chunk of my duties during those four hours is answering the phones, which is as often irritating as it is engrossingly entertaining. Coming up next is a post about how to get through me and on the air.

I'll be using this spot on the site to post whatever comes to mind. Sometimes it'll be something that relates to the behind the scenes activities of the show, sometimes a link to a story D&Z didn't get to, or one that *I* just happen to like. Sometimes it might just be a cartoon. Who knows? Most likely I'll be making it up as I go along
